On Monday morning, a Pennsylvania county coroner stated that three people died in a collision that involved around 50 vehicles piling up on Interstate 81 in Schuylkill County. The shocking incident happened at around 10:30 AM EDT on March 28, 2022, north of the Schuylkill County Airport. At the time of the crash, snow squalls were reported in the area. Footage of the incident has shaken everyone to the core as it features a truck on fire. Ever since the news was announced, it has become the topic of discussion on social media among netizens.
As per reports, as many as 60 vehicles were involved in the crash on the northbound lanes of the interstate. It was reportedly closed between exits 116 and 119 after the collision. The media reported that the fire trucks were facing difficulties to reach the scene of the pileup because of the heavy snow. The snowy conditions made travel difficult along the hilly Route 901. Dr. David Moylan, Schuylkill County coroner, said that the incident claimed the lives of at least three people while around 20 people were severely injured.
It is also reported that the toll can be even higher. Officials stated that a search of the scene has not been completed yet since some vehicles were still burning. It is expected that there could be more victims. Several videos have been posted on social media from the scene that shows people scrambling from their damaged vehicles to get off the interstate as the collision of the cars and trucks continues. Senior meteorologist, Chris Dolce said that much of the Northeast is shivering in temperatures that are far below average for late March.
Chris further added that cold air in addition to an upper disturbance is assisting to generate scattered snow showers in the region. Apart from this, some reports claim that at least 24 people were transported to nearby hospitals as they were severely injured in the incident. When the emergency crews reached the scene, three tractor-trailers were on fire whole some smaller vehicles also caught fire.
Talking about the cause of the horrific collision, Pennsylvania State Police stated that it occurred by a snow squall. Besides, the northbound lanes are reportedly closed between Exit 107: U.S 209 – Tremont/Tower City and Exit: Highridge Park Road.
